Position Summary: Independent Music Instructor (Contract)
The BravoStudio is seeking skilled, reliable Music Instructors to provide weekly private lessons to TBS clients in either an in-home or virtual format. This is an independent contractor position ideal for educators who value autonomy, consistent teaching opportunities, and administrative support.
Instructors set their availability, teach students provided by TBS, and maintain artistic and educational control over their lessons while collaborating with the studio to ensure a consistent, professional experience for families.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide weekly private music lessons in 30-, 45-, or 60-minute formats
- Teach lessons in students’ homes and/or virtually based on assigned schedule
- Maintain consistent weekly instruction and student continuity (minimum 6-month commitment per student when possible)
- Communicate availability clearly and in advance for monthly scheduling
- Prepare lesson plans and select appropriate repertoire and materials for each student
- Supply and maintain personal instruments and teaching equipment
- Provide a private virtual teaching space for online lessons
- Communicate scheduling conflicts with at least one week’s notice
- Uphold studio policies regarding cancellations, rescheduling, confidentiality, and professionalism
- Maintain a positive and respectful relationship with students, families, and TBS staff
Qualifications
- Proficiency on primary teaching instrument(s)
- Prior teaching experience preferred (private instruction, schools, or studios)
- Strong communication and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently and professionally
- Reliable transportation for in-home lessons (if applicable)
- Comfort with virtual teaching platforms
- Complete a criminal background check
- Ability to commit to a one-year contract cycle
- Must be legally eligible to work as an independent contractor (1099)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music
Compensation & Pay Structure (Sliding Scale)
This is a per-lesson, hourly contract position. Rates are based on experience, demand, and lesson format.
Lessons may be 30, 45, or 60 minutes, weekly
Pay Schedule
Paid twice monthly via Zelle
- 15th of the month (lessons taught 1st–15th)
- Last day of the month (lessons taught 16th–end)
Additional Compensation
Mileage Reimbursement
$0.67 per mile (At the Illinois mileage reimbursement rate) for in-home lessons
Calculated from instructor’s home to student homes and back
Gap Time Compensation
If lesson gaps exceed 30 minutes, time beyond 30 minutes is compensated at Illinois minimum wage ($13/hr)
Late Client Cancellations
Instructor is paid in full if client cancels with less than 24 hours’ notice
Note: TBS does not guarantee minimum hours, income, or number of students.
Contractor Status & Benefits
- This is a 1099 independent contractor position
- Instructors maintain control over instructional methods and materials
- No employee benefits (health insurance, retirement, paid time off, etc.)
- Instructors are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and liability coverage
- Instructors may teach elsewhere, provided it does not interfere with TBS commitments
Start Date & Contract Term
- Initial one-year contract, renewable annually by mutual agreement
- Either party may terminate the agreement with appropriate notice
